WIZARD:
Oh, won't you? Suppose you were dying?
Suppose that grizzly bear came in here
and tore your arm off. Are you telling
me you wouldn't take it then?
CAROL:
Well...
WIZARD:
You would, you see. Faced with death and
that kind of pain, you would. So we find
there is one situation in which you would
take heroin. Are there two?
CAROL:
No! I mean, I don't know, maybe if you're
going to include things like having your
arm torn off by a grizzly bear, maybe, yes.
WIZARD:
Oh, we don't have to include it at all. You
cannot go through life without experiencing
fear, anger, disappointment, boredom and
injustice. It just doesn't happen. Life
will always provide us with enough aggravation
to take drugs if that is what we are
really inclined to do.
You see, in the last analysis, drug addiction
is a habit and like any other habit it is
formed in the subconscious mind. That is
why no one consciously decides to become
an addict and why there are so many of them.
Our subconscious mind will always allow us
to be in situations which will allow us to
do the things we really want to. See?
(walks over to shelf)
There is a bag of heroin right here.
Jim leaps up and darts over to the shelf.
JIM:
Man, where the hell did this come from
it wasn't here five minutes ago?
